The exhibition offers a journey through all of the work of Matisse (1899 to 1952) such as Natures mortes aux oranges (1899), Luxe I and Luxe II (1907), Capucines à la danse I and Capucines à la danse II (1912) and Pommes sur la table (1916). While working on framing and stylization, Matisse studied in detail the notion of pairs, articulating the same format as compositions of views and extended details, as in the two still lifes, Seville I and II (1910-11) or La Robe rayée et Le Bras (1938). By the 1920s, re-visting Impressionism, Matisse returns to work in the series initiated very early with the views of the Pont Saint-Michel (1900). In 1920 he painted a series of three major landscapes from the pattern of the cliffs of Etretat, opening a dialogue with Claude Monet. (source: centrepompidou.fr)
