In singing, film and verse, declared dead hundreds of times, yet always resurgent, the “bohemian” is part of our modern myth. Through more than 200 works, from Turner to Corot, Courbet and Manet, Van Gogh to Matisse, the exhibition explores the profound transformation of the artist starting in the mid-nineteenth century, and the the fundamental contribution of nomadic peoples in the construction of European identity.

Ever since the Renaissance, artists and naturalists have observed animals closely and represented them as accurately as they could. Nevertheless, naturalism ends where the norm and morality begin: various ethical and aesthetic criteria were established which influenced the artists’ point of view. There is extraordinary variety in the ways the same animal is represented. They reveal our fascination and curiosity for a world whose diversity is far from fully explored. Through a set of major works, the exhibition looks at the relationships that artists, often great painters and sculptors, have developed with animals.
Beauté animale, the exhibition, is showing at the Grand Palais until July 7

An artistic encounter on an ambitious scale, the annual Monumenta exhibition invites a well-known contemporary artist to create a work especially for the huge space inside the glass-roofed nave of the Grand Palais in Paris. The exhibition has so far featured Anselm Kiefer in 2007, Richard Serra in 2008, Christian Boltanski in 2010 and Anish Kapoor in 2011. It is Daniel Buren – one of the most highly recognized and honored artists, by both his peers and the public – who will take up the challenge in May and June 2012.
