La mer à Paris
Information:
Who would imagine today that Paris was under water? Best known to house the municipal ossuary in Paris, the old quarries of building stone, commonly called "Catacombs", are now the only place in Paris where you can tell the recent history of the Earth in situ. This exhibition aims to highlight a little-known aspect of the Catacombs: its geological heritage, a treasure trove of underground Paris that flowed 45millions years ago. It reveals traces of a time when Paris was occupied by a tropical sea, and invites the visitor to discover fossils of animals and crustaceans, as well as geological formations that distinguish the different historical periods according irregularities in the earth's crust.
